Old Year, The

96 piece, solid wooden jigsaw puzzle of estimated c1908-09 production, featuring colour line-cutting and a push-fit cutting style. The cutter has also included four figural shaped pieces, one of which is unfortunately broken and missing its head!

This is my first example from this relatively uncommon brand, which features a painting by the American artist Maynard Dixon (1875-1946), one which was used as the cover image for "LIFE" magazine on 31st December 1908. In the painting, a wizard is seen holding a crystal ball in which the figure of a woman is visible. The apparent puzzle title of "The Old Year", recorded on both box lid and base, was presumably derived from the New Year's Eve publication date of the magazine!
