Sawtitout (C.E.T. and Co.)

Very limited production, London-based brand of wooden jigsaw puzzles, thought to be of c1915-1920s manufacture and showing a company name of C.E.T & Co.

This is believed to be an abbreviated reference to the London-based firm of C.E. Turnbull & Co., an importer and wholesaler of toys and fancy goods, well known in the field of dolls house manufacture, along with the very uncommon game "Konskripto", described in its advertising as being "The Great War Puzzle". They are also referenced on a label stuck to the box-base of a c1911 Zig-Zag map puzzle, promoting the game of Lasca

One common aspect of the first two examples I have seen is the presence of several triangle, or diamond- shaped pieces. Whether this is true of all is so far unknown.

Box lid design shows close similarity with that of the "Playtime" range of William Peacock, possibly the manufacturer of these puzzles for Turnbull's. See Here for one of their box lids, although the Sawtitout cutting does seem rather too unique, so perhaps simply a case of one or other firm using the other's box design for themselves..
