Shoolbred & Co, Jas

Jas. Shoolbred & Co., marketed very high-quality solid wood jigsaw puzzles c1910, some of which were double-sided. Research into the name has revealed the following information.
James Shoolbred and Company was located on Tottenham Court Road, a thriving centre for fashionable furniture shops from the 1860s. They operated one of the first great department stores in London, and whilst their trade was diverse, they began producing furniture in around 1870.
The likelihood is that, given the above information the puzzles were probably made elsewhere, possibly by William Peacock(similarity of style), for sale in their store. They are also now known to have marketed a range called The New Shaped-Out Picture Puzzle, outline cut to the shape of the subject, much akin to the Holtzapffel Figure-It-Out range. Examples are very scarce, so production is thought to have been quite limited. Similarities in material and cutting style can be found in the Puzzla album.
